A Forecasting Platform User Earned $Nearly Half a Million on Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.
A single trader, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that users put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet the odds had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity just before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other traders also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Intensifies
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation put forward on recently seeks to ban public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Industry Context
Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to politics.
Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
