Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
